When it comes down to it, everything should be about the food. Thats what keeps the customers coming back.
The amount you spend on uniforms will be such a small percentage compared to the amount that you'll spend on the location, the ovens, the advertising, not to mention the ingredients and other supplies you need, that its not worth mentioning.
Books on food service and hospitality managment do not discuss food service apparel.
In my research, I found the following book:
"How to plan and Operate a Restaurant" by Peter Dukas
This is a very excellent book, but as in most books on hospitality managment, there is no mention of workplace atire.
That makes sense when one oven costing $3500 will cost the same as uniforms for 12 people for over 14 years when buying uniforms twice a year at an assumed cost of $120 per dozen uniforms (thats expensive as uniforms go).
All you need to create a professional uniform is a white shirt, pants or skirt, shoes, and the specialty apron becomes the uniform!
Because they are on size fits all, your staff can swap them when changing shifts without issue and washing all of them together is relatively easy to do. This cuts down on the time that you need to spend worrying about uniforms significantly, and cuts down on the amount of aprons you need in your inventory at any time.
Running a restaurant isn't easy and the only way to succeed is through hard work, discipline, and unbridled enthusiasm for your enterprise.
If there's only one thing I've learned, it is that the amount that you accomplish does depend on the people that you work with.
There is NOTHING more annoying than having you work hampered for a few days because tech support only works 9 to 5 monday to friday and something just went wrong.
Uniforms are a part of your business where you can get the best quality for very little and they do play a critical part in your day to day operation.
It is very hard to pick a bad one out unless thats what you're going for. That said, you should definitely spend time to pick out the design of your uniform, but you should NOT have to spend a ton of time on the phone because the person on the other end isn't listening.
Go with your gut instincts and get the best uniforms you can because they WILL help in virtually every part of your business.
The Apron IS the uniform, and you can't go wrong with a Specialty Apron.
