If I hear the word ‘Apron’, the image that comes to mind is of a bib apron. You know, the one that hangs from the neck, and ties around the back.

You’ve probably seen these aprons worn in a school cafeteria, at delis, and in many other places.

I remember wearing one at a summer camp that I was in between fourth and fifth grade. We were making paper by recycling newspaper and it was a VERY messy undertaking.

What is a Bib?

The actual ‘bib’ of the apron is the portion of the apron hanging from the neck or shoulders that covers the chest. The bib prevents spilled food, paint, etc from damaging the clothes worn underneath.

The effectiveness with which Bib aprons or cover ups protect the clothes worn underneath (especially clothes worn on the upper body) made them a very common sight up to and throughout the 1960’s until cheaper clothes and washing machines made it less of hassle to deal with the occasional mess.


On a personal note, if you’re taking a course in acrylic painting, it doesn’t matter how cheap your clothes are. I wasn’t too happy about getting acrylic on my favorite pair of jeans during my attempts at painting when I took a course in high school: it really doesn’t come off.

Although Aprons in general went the way of the pocket protector and are not used anywhere near as much as they were before; they still see widespread use throughout the service industry. For example, Hotel uniforms and Restaurant uniforms commonly include Bib Aprons, and not without reason.

The bib apron can protect the other, more expensive and less damage resistant parts of the uniform from damage, it offers some protection for the employee (see cover-ups), and it can typically be worn for longer periods of time and handle more washes before needing replacement.
